 2017 Honda CR-V: What’s New with America’s Favorite SUV?

Athletic & Class-Defining Style

While its proportions are comparable to the 2016 model, the new CR-V has definitely been hitting the gym. It sports a more muscular and fit body that’s accented by new dual exhausts and the CR-V’s characteristic taillights. A bit of added width and length translates to more passenger headroom and legroom, and an additional inch-plus of ground clearance puts it in the same ballpark as off-roading masters like the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The CR-V’s cabin is just as impressive. Two inches of additional legroom in the rear is a major selling point for the 2017 CR-V, especially when considering that typical SUV owners have growing families. In the front, power-adjustable seats are standard on all but the base CR-V LX so that drivers can find comfort with the tilt of a button. An increase in cargo space also makes the CR-V a must-own vehicle; with the seats up, cargo capacity comes in at 39.2 cubic feet, and if you fold the seats flat, cargo space is boosted to a best-in-class 75.8 cubic feet.

High-quality plastics line the dashboard and doors. The steering wheel is slightly thinner, which improves instrument panel visibility. The center stack is more refined—a difficult task considering the CR-V of yesteryear had one of America’s best consoles—and organized thanks to deep storage compartments and segmented tray. These available bins commandeered the real estate after Honda’s engineers moved up and rearranged buttons to fit alongside the bulkier shifter. Air vents are also propped up above the touchscreen as opposed to being split along its side.

The 2016 CR-V came with just one engine: A peppy 2.4L four-cylinder. For 2017, a 1.5L turbo-four (190 horsepower) is new to all CR-V trims but the LX. It returns a combined 30 mpg (29 in AWD).

EX-plus trims are fitted with standard features and equipment that were typically optional in last year’s models, such as the following:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Lane-Keep Assist
  • Additional USB Ports
  • Digital Gauges
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring
  • Collision Mitigation
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Foot-Activated Power Liftgate (Height Adjustable)

A new infotainment system can also be found on the CR-V’s touchscreen. Back by popular demand is a new “volume knob,” which was MIA in the 2016 CR-V. We think that is a warranted addition.
